Level of Difficulty: Class IV-V / Advanced

The Braan River is one of Scotland’s most challenging and exciting. In just 9 kilometers, the Braan River delivers three Class V rapids and countless other Class IVs. At higher flows, the Braan River becomes and almost continuous Class IV+/V stretch of river. Not for the faint of heart at normal flows, it should definitely only be attempted by experienced and athletic rafters at high flows. The Braan River’s succession of whitewater rapids could not have been better engineered by boaters themselves: 2 kilometers of Class III lead to 5 kilometers of Class IV, which finally runs into the final 2 kilometers of Class V. There is a constant build-up to a grand finale in the form of an impressive gorge that has been dubbed the “Mad Mile.” Most rafting companies enforce a minimum age of 18 years.

Scenery: Mixed Woodland

The scenery is a mix of rural Scotland pastures and farmland, woods of towering Douglas Firs and pine trees, and Victorian follies. The riverbank itself is composed of dark, moss-covered volcanic rocks. Wildlife sightings include trout, jumping salmon, roe deer and a few species of rare birds.

Season: October - March

A highly rain-dependent river, the Braan can only be run during Scotland’s wetter winter months. Rafting companies help outfit rafters with appropriate clothing for the wetter weather.
